This is a special commission for a company in Scottsdale called the Carlisle Co. for their foyer area. Each piece measures 18”x 24”.

I was commissioned to do this memorial piece for a wonderful woman’s son who had passed away. Each item is symbolic and represents a piece of who her son was. Making this piece of art was very special, because I knew it needed to tell a story of his life. Her son was a talented being full of life, funny quotes and quirks and he often used that phrase “beautiful human” when he described people. I decided, while painting this piece, that if I would have gotten to know him in person he indeed would have been a beautiful human himself.

Here is another detail of the poppies. I also added three lions that represent himself, his mother and his sister to whom he had a very special relationship with. Most of the painting has a relationship with the number three which is how I united him to his family.

This is a detail of the Harlem Poppy with another bird. Inside the bird it says Je’maime which means I love myself. This is a nod to his time spent in France as well as the struggles he had to overcome.

There are 23 cedar waxwings. Each bird represents a year of Tomm’s life.
